1. Structures using -er...than; more/less...than; as...as

Cats are quieter than Dogs.

Dogs are more faithful than cats.

Cats are less noisy than dogs.

Dogs aren't as quiet as cats.

Cats aren't as noisy as dogs.


2. Adverb Clauses (副詞子句)

While cats maintain their independence, dogs are very loyal to their masters.

Whereas dogs are very loyal to their masters, cats maintain their independence.

Dogs are very loyal to their masters, whereas/while cats maintain their independence.

 

Tips: Whereas and while may be used with either clause to show contrast with no difference in meaning. When showing contrast such as this, a comma is used even if the second clause begins with an adverb.

3. Connectors (連接詞)

Dogs are very loyal to their masters; however/in contrast/on the other hand, cats maintain their independence.

4. Prepositions (介系詞)

Unlike/Contrary to dogs, which are very loyal to their masters, cats maintain their independence.

5. Conjunctions (準連接詞)

Dogs are very loyal to their masters, but cats maintain their independence.
